Types of Dumbbells

The three main types of Dumbbell most commonly used in gyms are; adjustable dumbbells, fixed-weight dumbbells and ‘selectorised’ dumbbells.

Adjustable dumbbells are typically formed with a metal bar in between two weight disks that are secured in place with clips or collars. The disks can be removed to adjust the weight in order to build muscle, most modern versions are simple to use either in the gym or at home.

Fixed-weight dumbbells are weights made in the shape of a more traditional dumbbell, and tend to be used with one in each hand at a slightly smaller weight to allow for more flexibility when working the different muscle groups.

Selectorised dumbbells are another kind of adjustable weight which is changed mechanically with a dial or a pin; it’s much easier altering the weight without having to manually remove plates.

Dumbbell Exercises

Exercises using dumbbells are integral to a strength training program; they can help develop different areas, such as maximal strength, endurance, and muscle mass. The benefit of free weights like these is that they activate the smaller muscle groups to control exercises, they also fit around your own body to make sure you’re performing the movement correctly – rather than having a machine dictate the pattern. Use of free weights is popular among athletes because they can develop a more balanced physique, by using a variety of different exercises to work the different muscle groups, such as; chest presses, shoulder rises, dead lifts and bicep curls.

Which dumbbells to buy

If you’re a beginner or you want to get some muscle tone without bulking up, the best choice is a lighter dumbbell – something under 10kg, they can sometimes be purchased for only a few pounds.

For those wanting to get into weight training, it’s not advisable to jump straight in with really heavy dumbbells, a better idea would be to work your way up from a medium weight of around 10 to 30kg to begin a gradual growth. Due to the considerable difference in weight, prices for a medium dumbbell do jump slightly to upwards of £25.

For more advanced trainers who are aiming to achieve a large amount of muscle growth, there are a large range of weights of over 30kg, including adjustable ones and a variety of different designs that start at around the £85 mark. It’s important to make sure you’re buying a strong, durable piece of equipment that will be worth the price and last some time.

Cost of dumbbells

The cost of dumbbells varies depending on the quality of the product itself, smaller sets of six bells used for toning can be purchased for less than thirty pounds, whilst larger versions are invariably more expensive for the high-end, heaviest pieces. It’s sometimes worth considering online retailers or second hand dumbbells, they’re likely to be cheaper but in much the same condition as when they were first purchased – providing they were of durable quality to begin with.
